Vezina Trophy


From the years 1927-1982, the Vezina Trophy went to the goalkeeper allowing the fewest goals during the regular season. Since 1983, this annual goaltending award is presented "to the goalkeeper adjudged to be the best at his position." The winner is voted on by the general managers of each of the NHL clubs, with the winner receiving $10,000 and the runners up $6,000 and $4,000. Georges Vezina was perhaps one of the best goaltenders at the time when the NHA and NHL were transitioning. During his NHL career Vezina led the league in at least one category every season he played. Georges played every game of every season from the birth of the NHL until his final game, on November 28, 1925. Georges collapsed during that game and died a few months later of tuberculosis. He was so highly thought of that the former owners of the Montreal Canadiens, Leo Dandurand, Louis Letournewau and Joe Cattarinich decided to present the NHL with a trophy in Vezina's honour.
