The
Stanley Cup is the oldest professional sports trophy competed for
in North America. Although the trophy was donated by Frederick Arthur,
Lord Stanley of Preston, he never actually presented the cup, nor
did he ever witness a championship game. Lord Stanley's family and
he were avid sports fans, and his daughter was among one of the
first female hockey players in Canada, and his 2 sons, Arthur and
Algernon formed a men's hockey club called the Rideau Rebels. Stanley
was of the opinion that there should be some form of challenge cup
to be held by the winning club, based on the accepted rules at the
time. He charged one of his aides, Lord Kilcoursie to arrange for
the purchase of the cup from a London silversmith for approximately
$50.00.
The
Cup is the only trophy where each member of the winning team has
his name engraved on the trophy. The original trophy was a bowl
with a silver ring below it for engraving. As time went on the ring
became full and teams began engraving their names around the fluting,
and some teams went as far as engraving their names on the inside
of the bowl.
In
1908 the Montreal Wanderers won the Cup but failed to engrave their
names on it. Perhaps the cost was too great, or they simply lacked
the initiative to complete the task. Whatever the reason, there
seems to be no known explanation as to why they chose not to follow
tradition. The following year, however, the Ottawa Senators added
another ring to the bottom of the bowl and began a tradition of
adding rings when the all of the space on the existing ring was
taken up.
The
Stanley Cup has been found in the basements of players, left in
bars, and found in rivers, yet it has endured year after year. The
look of the Cup has not changed in 42 years and as long as no teams
take more than their allotted space on the cup, it should last until
2005 without any more alterations. The NHL has made a copy of the
cup for promotional purposes so that when the original is "on
tour", visitors to the Hockey Hall of Fame can view it's replica.
Still, the Cup that is hoisted by the winning team captain is the
original.
The
Stanley Cup has a mystique about it. Boys will dream and practice
for years to try and make an NHL team. Men will compete for the
honour of carrying the Cup around the ice in victory, and it can
bring both winners and losers to tears.
