This annual award is presented to "the player finishing the regular season as the League's leading goal scorer." The trophy was a gift from the Montreal Canadiens to the NHL to honour the contribution and the career of the late Maurice Richard.

Richard is certainly one of the greatest players ever to play in the NHL. His 18 year career with Montreal saw him lead the League in scoring 5 times and became the first player to score 50 goals in a season, and the first player to reach the 500 career goal mark.

Richard was a fierce competitor, and never liked to finish second. One of the most feared sights in the NHL was Richard's piercing eyes, wide open as he barrelled in on the defense and ultimately the goaltender.
