The
Lester Patrick Trophy is presented annually to the person(s) who
“demonstrate outstanding service to hockey in the United States.”
Winners are selected by a committee comprised of the president of
the NHL, an NHL governor, a representative of the New York Rangers,
a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame builder’s section, a member
of the Hockey Hall of Fame Players section, a member of the US Hockey
Hall of Fame, a member of the NHL Broadcasters' Association and
a member of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association.
The award was first presented by the New York Rangers in 1966 to honour the late Lester Patrick, longtime coach and general manager of the Rangers, whose teams finished out of the playoffs only once in his 16 years with the club. Except for the League president, members of the selection committee are changed each year. The winner receives a miniature replica of the trophy. The trophy was presented to the NHL by the New York Rangers in 1966 in honour of the late Lester Patrick, former general manager and coach of the New York Rangers. Patrick served as General Manager from 1927-1945, during which time the Rangers won 3 Stanley Cups. Patrick also was instrumental in organizing the Pacific Coast Hockey League. |
