This
annual award is presented "to the player who best exemplifies
leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy
humanitarian contribution in his community." The trophy was
presented to the NHL by the NHL Board of Governors in 1988 to honour
the memory of the late Francis "King" Clancy.
Although
small in stature, Clancy was large when it came to the game of hockey.
He was a large factor in the original Ottawa Senators Hockey Club's
success and he later was instrumental with the Toronto Maple Leafs
and their Stanley Cup victories. Clancy also did some emergency
coaching when required, but he was always an ambassador for the
Maple Leafs and the game of hockey.
