The
Jack Adams Award is presented annually "to the NHL coach
adjudged to have contributed
the most to his team's success." The
winner is selected by a poll of the National Hockey League Broadcasters'
Association at the end of the regular season, with the winner receiving
$1,000.
Adams
may well have been one of the NHL's most famous coaches and executives
because of his long term association with the Detroit Red Wings.
Adams played some hockey at about the time the NHL was just beginning,
but he is most well known for his devotion to hockey in the Detroit
area. Adams developed a strong farm system which fertilized the
Red Wings with some exceptional talent, including Gordie Howe.
Adams
was with the Red Wings for 35 years and during that time they failed
to make the playoffs only 7 times, won 12 regular season championships
and 7 Stanley Cups. Adams was the first recipient of the Lester
Patrick Trophy for service to hockey in the United States.
