The
Conn Smythe Trophy is awarded annually at the conclusion of the
last game of the Stanley Cup Finals by the Professional Hockey Writers'
Association. The winner "is the player who is voted to be the
most valuable player for his team in the playoffs." The player
does not necessarily have to be a player from the winning team.
The
trophy was presented by Maple Leaf Gardens Limited, hence the design,
to the NHL in 1964 in honour of Conn Smythe, former coach, manager,
president and owner/governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Smythe
was instrumental in the building of Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto,
Ontario in the early '30's. The Gardens was the last "original
six" arena to close. |
