The
Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded "to the player
who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship
and dedication to hockey." The trophy is awarded at
the end of each season by a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers'
Association. A $2,500 grant from the PWHA is awarded annually to
the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund.
Bill
Masterton played for the Minnesota North Stars who exhibited those
qualities for which the trophy is awarded, perseverance, sportsmanship
and dedication to hockey. Masterton died on January 15, 1968. That
same year the trophy was presented to the NHL.
